If you’re in Kelantan, even for a short day-trip, it’s a good idea to sample the state’s famous Nasi Kerabu options.
One such place worth visiting is Lieniey Nasi Kerabu Tumis in Kota Bharu town.
The restaurant is just over 10 minutes from the airport. Renting a car is probably the easiest way to move about this town. Here’s a pro tip: search using the term “kereta sewa” and you’ll usually get a car a bit cheaper than if you searched using the keywords “car rental”.
If you go at around the time for brunch, it can get rather busy here so be prepared to wait in a long queue.
The blue Nasi Kerabu derives its colour from the butterfly-pea flower and is best enjoyed with Ayam Bakar (chicken) and Daging Bakar (beef). Paired with a piece of Solok Lada, also known as stuffed green chilli, you’ll have a hearty and delicious meal.
The chicken and beef dishes that were sampled were flavourful if a bit sweet as most dishes in Kelantan are. If you’ve not had Solok Lada before, imagine Yong Tau Fu, but also with shredded coconut, and spicier – it was super delicious.
The brunch at Lieniey Nasi Kerabu Tumis was lovely, but a word of caution – the drinks here are way too sweet despite ordering “kurang manis”. So you’ve been warned!
