They are small in size but cockroaches, termites and carpenter ants punch above their weight when it comes to the damage they can inflict on your home.

No matter how clean and tidy your home may be, you will likely have a run-in with a household pest every once in a while. Pests can damage your health and also your home, to the point of reducing its value.

1. Cockroaches

Researchers say cockroaches are the first and only creatures to be found living in caves before the dinosaurs were wiped out 66 million years ago.

Cockroaches are in love with your kitchen and wall cavities. They come out at night to feast on anything, including food left lying around, wallpaper, furniture and electrical wiring.

They are legendary survivors, immune to extreme heat and cold and they can live without their heads for days.

Cockroaches carry harmful bacteria such as E-coli and Salmonella and can cause skin allergies and asthma.

2. Termites

Termites shed their wings once they find a place to nest.

Termites are called the “silent destroyers” as they can cause tremendous structural damage to your home, chewing through walls, floors and wooden furniture.

Termites resemble ants but their antennae are straight and they have wings. Once they have found a place to nest they shed the wings. Repeated treatments are often needed to get rid of an infestation.

3. Carpenter ants

Carpenter ants chew through wood to create a nest.

Carpenter ants chew through wood not to eat, but to create a nest. Over time, this can damage the structure of your home and can even cause it to collapse.

You should always hire a professional to remove carpenter ants and to prevent future infestation. A pest-free home is a happy home.
