When it comes to Penang hawker food, wantan mee usually doesn’t make the top five on the list of foodies’ favourites. It usually comes after char kuey teow, asam laksa, curry mee, prawn or Hokkien mee, and kuey teow th’ng.
That said, if you happen to head up to Penang for a food trip (because, let’s face it, what other reason would you have for going to Penang?), this wantan mee stall on Chulia Street is well worth checking out.
The night hawker centre is actually located at the junction of Carnarvon Street and Chulia Street, and this stall is one of the busiest, making it hard to miss. There are tables by the roadside and no roof overhead, but don’t worry – if it rains, there’s a convenient kopitiam right at the corner.
This stall operates via self service and sees a long line of hungry customers on weekends. Thankfully, it moves quite quickly owing to the speed with which the hawkers work, so don’t be discouraged by the queue!

The wantan mee, priced at RM6, comes with deep-fried and boiled dumplings, char siew, vegetables, pickled chilli, and plenty of fried lard – plus, of course, the tasty and authentic noodles that have just the right texture: bitey but not too chewy.
You can also ask for their homemade sambal belacan if you like your wantan mee with a kick.
The char siew is just OK – it’s not really what Penang is known for – but the sauce is just right and the wantan bursts in your mouth with all the flavours you’d expect of a good pork dumpling.
Most importantly, the lard ties the entire dish together, making for a delicious and memorable experience!
All in all, this wantan mee stall is now on the list of this writer’s must-visits in Penang, and it should be on yours, too.
