Compared with the likes of Jalan Pudu and Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan San Peng is one of the less-busy roads in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
For residents here, however, this little stretch houses some of the most delicious hidden secrets – such as San Peng Prawn Mee, and a humble establishment called Guang Ji Chicken Ho Fun & Rice.
Also known simply as San Peng Road Ipoh hor fun, the “shop” here is a zinc-roofed structure by the roadside that doesn’t provide any creature comforts you would expect from a proper restaurant.
Whether you call it al fresco or semi-outdoor dining, at certain times of the day, expect to sweat a bit. On the plus side, you do get very good golden lighting for photographs!

Drop by on a Sunday for brunch and you will find the place packed. Still, it’s worth the wait, and once you’re at your table, do order the hor fun and, if you’re so inclined, tofu, braised chicken feet, and/or pork offal.
So, where does one start with this quintessential flat-noodle dish? It’s arguably as delicious as the best that Ipoh itself has to offer, the soup packed with flavour and aroma from the prawns’ head/shells, complete with tell-tale sign of prawn oil on the surface.
The steamed chicken is perfectly smooth with a soft, juicy texture while not being undercooked. The hor fun, too, is of similar quality texture-wise.
Overall, it’s the perfect serving of noodles for breakfast or brunch that will make you forget that you’re in the midst of KL city. Simply wonderful.

Meanwhile, the braised chicken feet, pork offal, and tofu are equally delicious: tender and flavourful. Of course, if you’re the kind who finds innards absolutely “offal”, give it a miss!
Also noteworthy is the the homemade sweet chilli sauce provided for dipping.
In the end, you will wish you had more stomach space to sample more of their dishes… perhaps the chicken rice next time!
