Have you begun to feel like the cleaning products you buy from supermarkets just aren’t doing the job anymore? Or, perhaps, you might be looking to cut down on chemicals in the home.

In which case, why not try making your own cleaning products? Not only will you know exactly what’s in the bottle, you can also adjust the quantity of ingredients and certain scents to your liking, while saving money at the same time.

Here are some simple homemade cleaners that you could make using common household ingredients. These will also make cleaning up a breeze once your Raya open house guests leave!

1. Bathroom cleaner

This works well on your tub, shower and tiles. Fill a jar with 275g baking soda, 120ml warm water, 100ml liquid soap, and two tablespoons of white distilled vinegar. For an extra strong solution, add a touch of lemon juice.

Mix well and apply to the surfaces that need to be cleaned. A simple wipe should do the trick, but for extra tough stains, some scrubbing might be required.

2. Oven and microwave cleaner

After extended use, your oven can get extremely grimy, and those stains can get pretty hard to clean. Mix liquid dish soap, baking soda, coarse salt, and distilled white vinegar to make a thick paste. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.

Apply the paste to the interior of your oven and let it sit overnight. Then, scrub thoroughly using a sponge soaked in warm water.

Lastly, spray the entire oven down with white vinegar and wipe with a clean cloth.

3. Window and glass cleaner

Cornstarch is the secret ingredient so you don’t get streaks on the glass every time you clean. Combine 235ml hot water, an equal amount of rubbing alcohol, and whisk in 60g of cornstarch.

Transfer the mixture to a spray bottle, spritz onto your mirrors and windows, and wipe clean with a microfibre cloth.

4. Air freshener

Fill a spray bottle with 235ml hot water, then add 12-15 drops of your favourite essential oils. Pour in 235ml distilled white vinegar, and a pinch of salt.

Shake and spray for fresh-smelling air.

5. All-purpose disinfecting cleaning spray

For a solution that will clean just about anything in your home, fill a large spray bottle with 120ml rubbing alcohol and 700ml hot water. Add a few squirts of antibacterial dish soap and give it a good shake.

Spray and wipe away!
