KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno divisional leader has promised a mammoth show of support for Umno president and prime minister Najib Razak on October 10 by bringing a million Red Shirts in Kuala Lumpur.
“We have decided on October 10 for our rally. We will gather at Low Yat, Bukit Bintang and 1 million ‘Red Shirts’ will come down and show support for Najib,” said Jamal Md Yunos, head of Sungai Besar Umno in Selangor, according to Malay Mail Online.
The mammoth rally would show that the prime minister too has many supporters, he told reporters after opening the divisional meeting today.
Tens of thousands of Malaysians have gathered in the federal capital occupying streets around Dataran Merdeka in a demonstration to call for reforms and for Najib to leave office. The rally, which began at 2pm on Saturday, passed the 24-hour mark without incident and is scheduled to end at midnight today.
Separate rallies were held in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching and in cities around the world.
Last week pro-Najib supporters wearing red shirts in contrast to Bersih’s yellow t-shirts, had threatened to hold a counter-rally at the same time this weekend. Plans were called off after Jamal met Kuala Lumpur police chief Tajuddin Mohd Isa and Dang Wangi police chief Zainol Abu Samah.
