KUALA LUMPUR:
MCA has said it will lobby for Japan to extend an apology and a “goodwill payment” to acknowledge the forceful recruitment of Malaysian ‘comfort women’ during its occupation of Malaya.

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department Head Michael Chong was quoted in The Sun Daily as saying, “We are seeking payment and justice for the victims who have endured emotional pain during the ordeal.”

He insisted that the ‘goodwill payment’ would be channeled to philanthropic causes.

On December 28, Japan and Korea arrived at a historic deal wherein the former apologised and committed to paying $8.6 million in compensation to victims who were forced to work as “comfort women” in Japanese brothels during World War Two.

The landmark agreement has renewed calls by other nations, including Taiwan and China, to push for the same from the former Axis power.
