Sungai Besi protest illegal, participants can be charged

Police say the protest today at the Sungai Besi toll will cause traffic congestion and disrupt public order.

Sungai-Besi
PETALING JAYA: Police have warned those who intend to participate in the #ShutdownSungaiBesi protest tonight that they face arrest, since the protest has been officially declared unlawful.

The protest, organised by Parti Amanah Negara’s Youth wing, is being held to demand the government call off plans to increase toll rates at selected highways as the people were already struggling with the high cost of living.

In a report in The Star Online, Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Razimi Ahmad said the protest would cause serious traffic congestion as well as disrupt public order on New Year’s Eve when Malaysians were travelling for social events to usher in the new year.

“Thus, the public is advised not to participate in this event because this event is unlawful under Section 9(1) (Peaceful) Assembly Act 2012 as it was not authorised by the police.

“Whoever participates in this event can be charged under Section 9(5) (Peaceful) Assembly Act 2012, whereupon conviction may result in a fine of no more than RM10,000,” he said in a statement.

Organisers originally planned to hold the protest at the Jalan Duta toll plaza but shifted venues due to the “stern response and feedback” from police there.

In a statement, Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin, the rally’s steering committee chairman, said the new venue was chosen because there were nearby exits that could be used should any untoward incidents occur during the protest.
