PETALING JAYA: PKR Sarawak chief Baru Bian today criticised former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his comments on the growing disaffection among Sarawakians, saying that the latter was as much to blame as current Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Speaking to FMT, Baru said that the situation “worsened as each PM took over.”
“Najib isn’t the only one to be blamed. It started with previous PMs, Mahathir included.
“Each one has forgotten the obligations of the Federal Government under the 18-point Malaysia Agreement,” Baru said, adding that it could have been “deliberately or conveniently forgotten”, and that Sarawak has always been treated like the “adopted child.”
Yesterday, Mahathir attributed the rising resentment among Sarawakians to the lack of resolve by the Najib administration to deal with alleged provocateurs.
“I don’t know what’s the opinion of the Sarawakians, but we can see now that there is a division. Everyone is talking about Sarawak as if Sarawak is not part of Malaysia,” he said in a recent interview with FMT.
Asked who he thought was responsible for the division, he said, “It is caused by the federal government’s weaknesses.”
