KUALA LUMPUR: DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang’s anti-Malay image as portrayed by Umno and PAS could not be further from the truth, said a former Internal Security Act (ISA) security personnel who knew the leader personally.
Speaking to DAP mouthpiece, Roketkini, Ridzuan Asit revealed that not once throughout Lim’s incarceration at the detention centre had he ever displayed any racist trait.
“Lim read a lot and he always had a book with him wherever he went. He didn’t talk much and spent most of his time alone.
“During the period allocated for sports, he would play ping pong and badminton. Or else, he would be reading all sorts of books, be it on the economy, biographies, or law,” the portal quoted him as saying.
Ridzuan, once an ardent Umno supporter, is now a Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) member.
Lim, he pointed out, was an activist who fought hard for people of all races.
“To my knowledge, Umno and Barisan Nasional insulted hudud, including one leader who said Kelantanese would be eating “hand soup” should hudud laws ever come to force.”
Under hudud, punishments such as the amputation of limbs are allowed.
Ridzuan also said that the ISA was a harsh law as it had been abused to imprison those who the government considered as enemies of the state.
“I quit my job as the centre’s guard after seven years as I could no longer tolerate the way the BN government had treated others, which was to use the ISA to safeguard their own interests,” he was quoted as saying.
Lim was among the 106 individuals detained under the draconian law, which allowed for detention for two years without trial. Lim was incarcerated for 17 months.
