SIBU: Tourism is expected to bring in RM103 billion in earnings for Malaysia this year, with the government hopeful of meeting a target of 30.5 million tourist arrivals.
Tourism minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the strong partnership between the government and the private sector and various initiatives to support the tourism industry would help to achieve the target.
Launching the Visit Sibu Year 2017 tourist promotion programme here, Nazri said the people of Sibu and Sarawak could contribute significantly by being good hosts to domestic and foreign tourists.
His speech was read by the ministry’s secretary-general, Ong Hong Peng.
Nazri said the ministry welcomed every effort to promote Sarawak which is blessed with a rich diversity of tourism products, as a major tourist destination in the country.
Sarawak received 4.5 million tourist arrivals last year, including 2.5 million foreign tourists.
He was confident that Visit Sibu Year 2017 would meet the target set based on the detailed preparations made by the local authorities and local tourism industry players.
