Bukit Tunku’s Lau Weng San, in a statement, said Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad’s (MAHB) planned to launch the KLIA Aeropolis project, which is expected to contribute RM30 billion to the GDP and more than 56,000 jobs over the next 15 years.
Lau said the authorities must remember that the location of the aeropolis is in Sepang, some 60km away from the city centre, and they must not confuse foreigners by using “Kuala Lumpur.”
According to him, the Selangor State Assembly, had, at its sitting in March, voiced its intention to ask for the name change as the airport is not located within the Federal capital.
“For example, the international airport in Singapore is not named as “Singapore International Airport” but ‘Changi International Airport’. The same goes to Heathrow International Airport instead of ‘London International Airport’.
“Such an exercise is deemed necessary. Using the name ‘Sepang’ will give international fame to ‘Sepang’. The Federal Government should and must recognise the existence and the role of the Selangor State Government in bringing foreign investments,” he said.
