PETALING JAYA: Vivian Lee May Ling got the short end of the stick from her relationship with controversial Internet personality Alvin Tan, say many netizens.
This follows the Session’s Court’s decision to jail Vivian for six months on a sedition charge for publishing a “bak kut teh” image during Ramadan three years ago.
A number of netizens sympathised with her plight, contrasting it with Tan’s escape from the long arm of the law when he scooted off to the United States seeking asylum.
“Hubungan vivian dengan alvin tan ni antara contoh kata pepatah… habis madu sepah di buang,” tweeted netizen Tuan Manggis, saying that Alvin had left her once he was done with the relationship.
“Sex Blogger Alvin Tan’s Ex-GF Jailed For 6 Months: Despite the fact that she was not the main offender,” tweeted netizen Dean Roon.
“Well at least she has guts unlike Alvin Tan the coward,” commented netizen Fenny Deckles.
Other netizens commented that although Lee’s racist “bah kut teh” post was indeed deserving of punishment, her punishment was much too high considering how many other racist Malaysians had gone unpunished.
Facebook user Jack Sean Chong drew parallels to the recent four-month jail sentence served to Shahrul Anuar, the mobile phone thief whose theft sparked the Low Yat riots last year.
“She deserved it for what she did, no doubt. But another guy who stole and created massive chaos in the country, caused dozens of innocent people to get hurt… How long was he sentenced?” he commented on Facebook.
“Only four months in jail and RM1,000 in fines. Is this how justice is served?
“4 months only for a guy who started a riot in Lowyat and six month for a bak kut teh post? Nice,” wrote Jason Chan.
Another Facebook comment by Masilamani Chelliah agreed with the duration of her jail sentence, but said that the same level of harshness should be served to other racists lurking around in the country.
“I think 6 months is not too harsh sentence but at same time lots of racist not even charged. Law must be for all malaysians and (not) for certain group only,” the Facebook user wrote.
