PETALING JAYA: Amanah leaders have slammed Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin for saying their leaders only want to listen to DAP’s Lim Kit Siang and his son, Guan Eng.
Amanah Vice-President Mujahid Rawa said that he was actually sad to see the “bright” Khairy Jamaluddin resort to such cheap politics, through his baseless allegations.
He noted that such claims had been recycled by Amanah’s enemies.
The Parit Buntar MP said Khairy’s statement was an indictment on the future of Umno.
“If this is the kind of politics the Umno Youth chief practises, then the party’s future looks bleak.
“In Pakatan Harapan, we are speaking up on real issues and ideas affecting the country, real reforms for the future. This is the kind of politics we are practising.”
Mujahid said that Amanah’s political foes constantly attacked the new party just because they shared the same ideals of good governance, transparency and accountability as DAP.
“I would like to ask Khairy, what ideals does Umno fight for? It is certainly not good governance, accountability and transparency.”
Amanah Strategic Director Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, meanwhile, refuted Khairy’s claim that Amanah was made up of disgruntled members, pointing out that the party’s members were made up of Malaysians from various professional and religious backgrounds, who were passionate for change.
He said Khairy’s statement was reflective of the insecurity of Amanah’s nemeses, who were threatened by the new political party’s brand of progressive Islam.
Dzulkefly said Amanah’s opponents in the by-elections were also challenged by the party’s fielding of local talent who understood the needs, fears and hopes of the local communities.
“They are threatened by us because they know Amanah is not alone. They know our collective strength with our PKR and DAP allies.
“If they were not threatened by us, they would not be bothering us,” he told FMT.
Earlier today, Umno Online reported Khairy as saying that Amanah was a party founded by disappointed PAS leaders who failed to listen to their own president because they wanted to listen to Kit Siang and Guan Eng.
Hence, he said Amanah was a DAP lackey and that a vote for Amanah was indirectly a vote for DAP.
