PETALING JAYA: Mohd Shafie Apdal’s decision to leave Umno after the Supreme Council’s decision to suspend his membership till investigations are completed comes as no surprise.
Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Director of Strategic Communications Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the decision was already expected since Shafie was involved in a movement detrimental to the party.
“Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal’s decision to leave Umno was not surprising at all. It was expected. All this while, his movement was detrimental to the party,” he tweeted today.
The Kota Belud MP also explained Umno was ready to deal with anyone who tried to harm the party.
“It was that way before and it is more so now.”
He added that Umno’s strength did not lie in any one individual but in its mission and struggle. Leaders come and go and all that remains is the struggle.
Previously, the Supreme Council had unanimously decided to fire Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir from the party because it was found that both had violated the party’s discipline and constitution.
Both were charged with collaborating with Opposition parties while demonising the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Razak and the government.
Although Shafie had already been fired from his post in the Cabinet along with Muhyiddin for criticising Najib’s leadership, he was lucky as the Supreme Council had only suspended his membership until the party’s disciplinary council’s investigations were finished.
Rahman also pointed out that Shafie’s exit from the party did not affect Umno in Sabah because the people’s support was for the party and not for any individual with his own interests.
“Semporna Umno is still functioning and will be strengthened with a stronger line of leadership who care about the people’s interests.”
