76-year-old who allegedly insulted PM out on police bail

PETALING JAYA: A 76-year-old author who allegedly insulted Najib Razak in a WhatsApp group was yesterday released on police bail due to his age and poor health, The Star reported.

Quoting a police source, the English daily said the suspect was released by the Johor Baru Magistrate’s Court after police failed to get his remand extended.

“This was taking into consideration the suspect’s old age and poor health as he suffers from high blood pressure and has kidney problems,” the source was quoted as saying.

The septuagenarian had been in police custody for three days.

On July 2 , it was reported that the suspect , under the name “Pa Ya”, was arrested after he allegedly sent an offensive image of the prime minister via WhatsApp.

The man was arrested at his home in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya, here following a police report lodged against him. Police also seized a Samsung G5 mobile phone from him.

Investigations will be conducted under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of not more than RM50,000 or a maximum one year’s jail or both upon conviction.

The arrest of the elderly man, a few days before Hari Raya drew criticism, including by the Centre For a Better Tomorrow (Cenbet), which called the action taken against the author as “mind-boggling”.
