DoJ suit: Amanah wants Umno Supreme Council to act

Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad

PETALING JAYA: Amanah’s Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has called on the Umno Supreme Council to save its party.

In a statement, Dzulkefly said the United States Department of Justice’s (DoJ) civil suit highlighted how 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds were misappropriated and said that at the end of the day, the buck stopped with Prime Minister Najib Razak.

He said as the chairman of 1MDB’s board of advisers, Najib had a fiduciary role, and ultimately, was morally responsible for the fund and whatever happened to it.

Dzulkefly said that the Umno Supreme Council was the “last bastion” to remove Najib.

“It is time to rise above partisan and self interests, and be counted as the true patriots, regardless of our ideological conviction and political persuasion.”

He added that the nation and its leaders on both sides of the political divide must be committed to an immediate comprehensive reform agenda and turn around the nation to become both a vibrant and functional democracy.

The DoJ filed lawsuits yesterday saying that over USD3.5 billion was misappropriated from 1MDB.
In its lawsuits, filed in Los Angeles, the DoJ said it sought to seize assets purchased using money allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.
