PETALING JAYA: Frustrated at being made the laughing stock of the international community, a coalition of student groups are calling for a rally called #TangkapMalaysianOfficial1.
The students plan to hold the rally in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 27 and are targeting some 10,000 participants to join them in pressuring the authorities to arrest and charge “Malaysian Official 1.”
Although the identity of “Malaysian Official 1” has never been revealed, the individual was mentioned, along with others, when the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) filed lawsuits to seize assets allegedly purchased by them using 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.
Spokesperson for the student coalition Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, was quoted in The Star Online as announcing in a press conference that the rally was open to all members of the public regardless of their background and political leanings.
“The issue of 1MDB is no longer an issue inside the country, but has become big news all around the world. The youth can’t take being a laughing stock of the international community any more,” she said, adding that a police permit would soon be applied for so the rally could go ahead.
According to the DoJ lawsuits, over USD3.5 billion (RM14 billion) was allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB over a four-year period and used to purchase a string of properties including other assets.
Along with the individuals mentioned to have allegedly conspired to fraudulently divert billions of dollars from 1MDB was “Malaysian Official 1.”
