IPOH: Eight men assaulted a policeman when he tried to stop them from stealing tiles at a construction site in Taman Sri Wangi Lahat, here, on Thursday.

He sustained head injuries.

Ipoh police chief Sum Chang Keong said the eight men, wearing full-face helmets, had gone to the site on four motorcycles about 4 pm.

Sum said the policeman had followed the men and decided to get down from his car upon seeing them attempting to steal some tiles at the site. On seeing him, the suspects fled.

“However, the policeman managed to apprehend one of them and a scuffle broke out. The other suspects then went to their friend’s aid and assaulted the policeman.

“The policeman fell unconscious and when he regained consciousness, found his pistol missing,” Sum said in a statement here on Friday.

He said police later recovered the pistol, a Smith & Wesson containing five rounds of ammunition, at the scene, and also two pieces of wood, believed to have been used to hit the victim.

He said police were looking for the eight suspects and had recorded statements from two witnesses.
