PETALING JAYA: The new Perak state assembly Speaker will be named today and the role will go to an MIC representative again, The Star Online reported.
Confirming this, state Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir said the new speaker’s name had already been submitted to the secretary of the state legislative assembly, the report said.
Zambry said there was no ruling that the name of the candidate must be announced openly, like the approach taken by the Opposition. He added that it would suffice to give the name of the candidate in writing to the secretary, seven days before the sitting convenes.
The state assembly sitting convenes today.
“They (opposition) are just ‘geram’ (furious) with us because we are not making any announcement about our candidate, and they are merely finding fault so that the candidate can be disqualified on technical grounds.
“We are not stupid, we know the rules. They just want to create havoc at the sitting tomorrow (today). They love playing such games, and coming up with all sorts of stories, but I will not be influenced by their tactics,” Zambry was quoted telling reporters yesterday.
He was responding to a police report lodged by Perak Wanita DAP chief Lim Pek Har on his delay in naming a candidate.
She claimed that since Zambry had failed to meet the Aug 1 deadline, Perak DAP deputy chairman V Sivakumar will be the new Speaker, and any attempt to push new names for the post can be considered cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
The state Speaker’s seat fell vacant after the incumbent – MIC deputy president SK Devamany was appointed Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
