Ambiga calls for united Opposition

SUNGAI BULOH: A united Opposition front is needed to topple Barisan Nasional in the next general election, National Human Rights Society (Hakam) President Ambiga Sreenevasan reiterated tonight.

Speaking at Anwar Ibrahim’s 69th birthday party outside the Sungai Buloh Prison here today, Ambiga said the Opposition had managed to achieve many things since the Reformasi movement in 1998.

“There has only been progress since the Reformasi movement. Only Anwar Ibrahim could create an Opposition front so strong that in 2013 it won the popular vote.

“People must respond by bringing the change he has fought for so long.”

Ambiga added that in response to Anwar’s struggle, the Opposition needed to remain united.

“I ask you all today, let us make a pledge. The Opposition must be as strong as when Anwar put it together in 2008. This is the kind of Opposition that we want to see.

“We must never give up. We must fight in GE14 to make sure the people’s rights are protected.”

Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, who was present, agreed with Ambiga’s statement saying that the main objective was to topple Barisan Nasional and Prime Minister Najib Razak.

“We have to know who our enemy is. Today in Malaysia, Anwar is in prison and ‘Malaysian Official 1’ is walking free.

“We have to make sure we stick together to fight this common enemy.”

On his health, Hanipa said he was steadily recovering and hoped to be in Parliament again soon.
