Toddler believed to be abused dies

SUNGAI PETANI: A two-year-old girl from Amanjaya here died on Wednesday, believed to be from physical abuse based on the presence of old and new bruise marks all over her body.

Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Md Zukir Md Isa said the child died about 9.40pm on Aug 10 on the way to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here.

“According to the doctor (who examined her), the little girl was suspected to have been abused as there were bruise marks on her abdomen and genitals, besides old and new bruise marks on other parts of her body,” he said in a statement today.

Md Zukir said the victim had been under the care of the mother and her boyfriend, while the father was at the Dengkil Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Selangor since December last year.

Following the child’s death, her 22-year-old mother and the 24-year-old boyfriend have been remanded for a week from yesterday until Aug 17 to facilitate investigation.

Md Zukir said it was found from previous records that the victim was abused by her caregiver on Jan 9 and that the person was charged in court on Feb 1, 2016.
