PETALING JAYA: New rules, including a new driver’s card, will be imposed on Uber and GrabCar ride-hailing drivers, but regulations on taxis will be relaxed.

Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said today that these measures would be carried out so that taxis and ride-hailing services will be under the same environment.

Additional regulations would be imposed on Uber and GrabCar, while taxis would undergo deregulation to allow them to compete with the new ride-sharing services, he said according to Star Online.

Uber and GrabCar drivers would have to apply for the drivers’ card from SPAD, the land public transport commission.

Yesterday, SPAD chairman said details of the new regulation scheme for ride-hailing and taxis would be announced next week.

Taxi drivers have asked that Uber and GrabCar drivers be required to have their vehicles inspected by Puspakom.
