PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan Youth has urged the authorities to allow university students and young Malaysians to take part in a “Tangkap MO1” rally planned for August 27.
Mohd Sany Hamzan, head of Amanah Youth, reminded the authorities that student voices should not only be heard, but be taken seriously by leaders.
“The voice of the students is a form of the independent third force that is free of any political influence. It is imperative that their views aren’t only heard, but heeded as advice for leaders.”
Reading out a press statement, Sany said that the youth wings of the Opposition coalition would pledge their full support for the rally at the end of the month.
University students are behind the “TangkapMO1 rally”, the purpose of which is to pressure the authorities to bring charges against the unnamed “Malaysia Official 1” stated in civil suits brought by the US Justice Department.
The Justice Department has alleged that more than USD3.5 billion (RM14 billion) was misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and used to buy luxury property, including a hotel and mansions in Beverly Hills, and other assets.
Sany said: “It is puzzling why the Malaysian government seems reluctant in solving this puzzle (of the identity of ‘Malaysian Official 1′).
“There are no answers and no explanations about any effort to search for the truth behind the involvement of ‘Malaysian Official 1’ unless there is indeed something to hide for the interests of certain quarters.”
Asked about their plans to attract a bigger crowd, PKR youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the youth wings would mobilise all their members and added, “I think it will gain momentum in the next few days.”
DAP Youth leader Wong Kah Woh however said it was still too early to tell what response was to be expected.
