GEORGE TOWN: Penang Island’s southern area will experience a 10-hour water cut on Saturday and Sunday to facilitate expansion works, the state water utility provider announced today.
Residents living in Sungai Tiram to Gertak Sanggul in Bayan Lepas will experience a water supply interruption from 10pm on Saturday to 8am on Sunday. Some 15,000 registered users are to be affected.
Penang Water Supply Corporation chief executive officer Jaseni Maidinsa said the scope of work would involve the improvement of supply for those living in Bayan Lepas, Teluk Kumbar, Gertak Sanggul and Balik Pulau.
He said works would begin from late night Saturday to 8am Sunday over the coming weekend to minimise potential economic impact, and to avoid peak water demand periods.
The works, he said, would be carried out at Lebuh Sungai Kara 1, Jalan Bayan Lepas and Jalan Permatang Damar Laut — all in Bayan Lepas.
Motorists are advised to avoid the stretch from 10pm to 8am.
Jaseni said the works were also to accommodate the widening of roads by the Public Works Department in the Bayan Lepas area, through additional 600m connections.
Jaseni added that the works at four sites would be carried out simultaneously to ensure minimal supply downtime.
“When completed, these works will benefit about 30,000 registered water consumers.
“With these connections in place, PBA will be in a better position to address projected future water demand and minimise the risks of water shortages or rationing during future dry seasons,” he said in a statement.
The following are the affected areas: Sungai Tiram to Bayan Lepas Town; Penang International Airport area; junction of Permatang Damar Laut to Kampung Seronok/Kampung Binjai; and junction of Permatang Damar Laut to Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul.
PBA added water supply to the airport and the Free Trade Zone would not be affected.
