RIO DE JANEIRO: Rio Olympics bronze medallist Azizulhasni Awang will be told to seek clarification from the Terengganu Menteri Besar’s office over his claim that a request for assistance did not come through.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Azizulhasni should not allow grouses against Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman to spoil his celebration after bagging the bronze medal in the keirin event here.
Regarding the cyclist’s outburst in his Facebook posting immediately after winning a first-ever Olympic medal in Malaysian cycling history, Khairy believes it could be a misunderstanding and could be easily resolved.
“Azizulhasni should not allow it to overshadow what he has achieved in Rio.”
Khairy said this after watching Lee Chong Wei cruising into the semifinals after a 21-9, 21-15 straight sets win over Taiwan’s Chow Tien Chen in the quarterfinals.
In his Facebook posting, Azizulhasni, 28, claimed that Ahmad Razif had failed to respond to a request for a road bike for him and fellow rider Fatehah Mustapa, both Terengganu-born cyclists, to prepare for the Olympics.
“I really don’t know what transpired but Azizulhasni gets full support from my ministry and the Sime Darby Foundation.
“Maybe he wanted additional support which he applied for from Terengganu,” said Khairy.
Meanwhile, Malaysian chef-de-mission Mohamad Al Amin Abdul Majid shared Khairy’s sentiment and said the matter could be easily resolved.
“The cyclist should just write to the MB (Menteri Besar) as his request may not have reached his (MB) attention.
“I will speak to Azizulhasni before he leaves for home tonight.”
