PETALING JAYA: The Johor royal family will join millions of Malaysians in rooting for badminton mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in their final Olympic match tonight.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said he and his family would be eagerly watching the finals against the Indonesia pair later tonight.

Chan and Goh are playing for Malaysia’s first-ever Olympic gold against Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir.

“We pray they will be able to prevail over titans Indonesia and deliver Malaysia’s first Olympic gold medal.”

Sultan Ibrahim also congratulated the men’s doubles shuttlers Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong who have progressed to the men’s doubles finals.

“I would like to congratulate both players for their exemplary grit, tenacity and courage that showcased the best of Malaysian sports,” he said, adding he was especially proud of Tan, who hails from Tangkak, Johor.

“Remember, you not only represent Malaysia but also Johor.

“Give your best to bring pride and glory to Johor and Malaysia.”

Sultan Ibrahim also praised the nation’s other Olympic heroes, divers Pandelela Rinong, Cheong Jun Hoong and cyclist Azizulhasni Awang.

Pandelela and Cheong had won silver in the 10m synchronised platform event, while earlier today, Azizulhasni won the bronze medal in the men’s track cycling keirin.

“I wish all our athletes in the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil all the very best. We are rooting for all of you back home.”
