KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state government today handed over documents to the Election Commission on the proposal to increase the number of state representatives to 73 from 60.
The state government was represented by State Legislative Assembly Speaker Syed Abas Syed Ali while the EC, by its state director Idrus Ismail.
Idrus said the documents would be sent to the EC chairman for an indepth study.
“We will try to expedite the process so that it (increase) could take effect in the 14th General Election,” he told reporters after receiving the documents at Syed Abas’ office here, today.
On Aug 9, the state assembly approved a bill to amend the state constitution to accommodate an increase in the number of assemblymen to 73 from 60.
Of the 55 assemblymen who voted, only three opposed while one abstained.
