PETALING JAYA: With the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro yet to end, sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin has set his sights on Tokyo 2020.
Khairy, writing on Twitter from Rio, described this year’s Olympic campaign as Malaysia’s best and said all the athletes had done well for their country.
Malaysia’s athletes won four silver medals and one bronze in badminton, diving and cycling.
The silver medallists were: badminton – Lee Chong Wei (men’s singles); Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong (men’s doubles); Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying (mixed doubles); diving – Cheong Jun Hoong and Pandelela Rinong (women’s synchronised 10m platform). The bronze medal came from cyclist Azizulhasni Awang (men’s keirin).
“Our athletes have done the nation proud. Best ever Olympic campaign. I’m proud of them,” he said. “Now we plan for Tokyo 2020. We begin today.”
He expressed his gratitude to the former sports minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek during whose tenure the ministry began the “Road to Rio” programme four years ago that led to the country’s success at this year’s Olympic Games.
