PUTRAJAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin has rubbished China’s national badminton head coach Li Yongbo’s claim that Lee ChongWei may have already become a world champion if the latter had trained under his team.
China’s performance, the youth and sports minister opined, had also deteriorated.
“I think Lin Dan took so much out of Lee . He gave his best but Chen Long was better on that day,” he told reporters when met at the Bunga Raya complex after welcoming Malaysia’s athletes returning from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In the badminton finals , Lee had to be content with a silver medal, losing 18-21, 18-21 in 73 minutes, to China’s Chen Long.
Lee booked a spot in the finals after beating Lin Dan the day before.
Following Lee’s defeat to Chen Long, Li had claimed that Lee would have already become a world champion if the latter had trained under his team.
On a related matter, Khairy felt that badminton and diving would be able to win Malaysia medals in Tokyo come the 2020 Olympics.
“We will appoint coaches from China to help our divers.”
The country, Khairy said, however needs to train more cyclists to succeed Azizulhasni Awang, who clinched the bronze medal in the men’s keirin track cycling.
The Rembau lawmaker, however, was happy that Malaysia was number two in Asean in terms of medal tally.
“In terms of number of medals, we couldn’t have asked for more.”
Malaysia managed to win four silver medals three for badminton, one for diving and a bronze for cycling.
