PETALING JAYA: A video of a schoolboy being violently assaulted while his classmates cheer his aggressor on and not lift a finger to help the victim, has gone viral on social media.
In the two-and-a-half-minute clip, which was uploaded on Facebook, the victim was punched, kicked, slapped and had a plastic chair thrown at him as well as put in a chokehold in a classroom.
When the victim attempted to get up from the floor, the bully continued slapping and choking him.
Several classmates sat around and watched the fight, while some laughed and giggled as they captured the scene on their mobile phones.
The assault drew the ire of netizens, most of whom were angered by the incident and who questioned the whereabouts of the teachers.
A Facebook user, identified as Steady Uchu Tuai Rmh, wondered if the teachers were sleeping on the job, while user Mike Lim echoed a similar sentiment and implied that the teachers were paid for doing nothing.
“What is becoming of today’s education system,” Sawadee Sabaai said.
The video has received over 90,000 views and over 5,000 shares since it was uploaded more than 11 hours ago.
A Bukit Aman spokesperson confirmed the incident took place at a school in Putatan, Sabah and the victim’s father had lodged a police report over the incident on September 6.
The latest incident comes in the wake of a Form Two student who landed in the ICU for brain haemorrhage after being beaten up by four Form 3 students in a school in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) Secretary-General Lok Yim Pheng has since called for heavier punishments to be imposed on student bullies in school.
