PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 Chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah is a hero in the eyes of many Malaysians, lawyer-cum-activist Ambiga Sreenevasan said today.
“She and her team work hard to educate the public on the shortcomings of our institutions, particularly the Election Comission.
“Bersih lives in the hearts and minds of all those who yearn for a better Malaysia.”
Ambiga said this in response to Sungai Besar Umno Chief Jamal Mohd Yunos, who earlier today labelled the upcoming Bersih 5 rally as the “Opposition’s pet dog” and Chin as a “circus animal” when threatening to hold a counter-demonstration against the Bersih 5 rally.
Chin had previously announced that the Bersih 5 rally would be held in November. The exact date is to be announced at a Sept 14 press conference.
Despite conceding that Jamal had the right to hold a counter-demonstration, Ambiga was full of praise for Bersih 2.0, saying that it is a “tough act to follow”.
“He has every right to gather legally and peacefully on the same day as Bersih. No one in Bersih will deny that.
“My response generally is to ignore comments by Jamal Yunos.
“Let the people speak through Bersih, which is known worldwide for its role in promoting democracy.
“They are a tough act for anyone to follow,” Ambiga told FMT.
Meanwhile, clean-elections activist Adrian Lim Chee En also took a swipe at Jamal and defended Chin, saying that Chin would be “the people’s dog”.
“If Maria Chin is a dog, she would be the people’s dog.
The planned rally is to pressure the government to take action against “Malaysian Official 1” mentioned in the US Department of Justice’s lawsuits related to 1MDB.
The DoJ has filed civil suits to seize properties allegedly bought using money misappropriated from 1MDB in the United States.
