Gruesome death ends family’s Aidiladha celebrations


GEORGE TOWN: Every year, 70-year-old Kader Batcha Chinnatamby makes a trip to town to buy putu ma­yam for Hari Raya Haji. However this year his trip ended in a gruesome accident that has left his friends and family in shock.

According to a report in The Star Online, Kader Batcha was turning into Victoria Street from Chulia Street when his motorcycle and a Rapid Penang bus moving in the same direction collided, causing Kader to be pinned under the bus and dragged for about a metre in the 1pm incident yesterday.

His son, Mohd Hussain Kader Batcha, 41 was quoted as saying that his father left their home in Free School Road to buy putu mayam for Raya Haji, which was a routine every year.

Mohd Hussain’s close friend Bashyir Mohd Ali expressed shock upon hearing of the tragedy.

“We were to celebrate Raya Haji together today,” Bashyir said.

According to the news report, it took Fire and Rescue Department personnel from the Beach Street station more than an hour to extricate Kader Batcha’s body from under the bus.

In a statement, Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd, Rapid Penang’s operator promised to conduct a thorough investigation of the accident.

Head of Operations Osman Amir said the company would cooperate with the relevant authorities in probing the incident apart from getting in touch with the family of the deceased to render help in any way.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said police were investigating the matter and would issue a statement later.
