KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians in Tamil Nadu, India are advised to remain calm, stay alert and adhere to instructions given by the local authorities following the one-day bandh (strike) in the state today.
Malaysia’s Consul-General in Chennai, Ahmad Fajarazam Abdul Jalil said Malaysians there needed to remain calm and ensure they were in safe areas such as student dorms and campuses, hotels and at homes, as advised by the local authorities.
“Although the consulate is closed today in conjunction with Malaysia Day, there are officers on duty to monitor the situation throughout the day,” he told Bernama.
International media today reported that various farmers’ associations and trade organisations had called for a statewide shutdown due to the water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka State over the Cauvery River issue.
Riots erupted in Karnataka after India’s Supreme Court ordered the release of water from the river to Tamil Nadu on Sept 12, despite Karnataka facing an acute shortage of water in its reservoirs and rivers.
Ahmad Fajarazam said Malaysians requiring assistance and information could contact the Consulate-General Malaysia in Chennai via +91 44 2433 4434 or mobile +919940337339 or +919791114261.
