PETALING JAYA: The Gerakan party has made a renewed attempt to persuade the electoral reform group Bersih to hold its proposed Nov 19 Bersih 5 rally in a stadium and not on the streets.
Gerakan Youth leader Tan Keng Liang offered RM20,000, pledged by donors to rent a stadium.
“We are confident that a medium-sized stadium is enough,” Tan told reporters in Kuala Lumpur this morning. He said the offer was made to “prevent chaos, like in Bersih 3”, according to Malaysiakini.
Tan said various donors had pledged RM17,000, with Gerakan Youth topping up the amount to RM20,000. He said there were also offers of assistance to provide free use of a stadium for Bersih.
His offer comes two months after a previous offer of a stadium was rejected by Bersih leader Maria Chin.
He said he was open to a suggestion that the RM20,000 be used by Bersih for its series of ceramahs across the country beginning Oct 1. “We need to get the nod from council members and donors, after which we will consider it,” he said.
The ceramahs will take place in Kangar, Lumut, Kota Bharu, Johor Bahru, Sandakan and Miri to raise support for the street rally.
