NEW YORK: Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has arrived to represent Malaysia on his maiden appearance at the United Nations General Assembly next week.
Zahid and his entourage arrived by commercial flight at about 9.25 pm New York time on Saturday.
He is making his fourth visit to the United States since appointed deputy prime minister in July last year. He will be in New York for a week.
The Malaysian delegation includes foreign minister Anifah Aman and senior officials of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, Foreign Ministry and Home Ministry.
Last month, Zahid chaired a Security Council open debate on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
He will deliver Malaysia’s national statement for the general debate at the General Assembly on Friday.
He will also attend a General Assembly meeting on refugees and migrants and a Security Council meeting on Syria.
At last year’s General Assembly, Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that Malaysia would accept 3,000 Syrian migrants over three years.
