BN polls secret: One symbol, one candidate

KOTA BARU: Continuing his appeal for a united opposition, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad said last night that the Barisan Nasional’s secret to victory was the use of one symbol and one manifesto at general elections.

“BN only won because they fought as one party, they used one symbol and one manifesto and always only put one candidate. All fourteen component parties would support that one candidate,” he told a 5,000-strong crowd at a ceramah here last night.

He said BN could be defeated at the polls and has won and held power for 60 years because of the failure of the opposition to unite.

Dr Mahathir, who is chairman of the new Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, has campaigned for opposition parties to form a united front and put up one-to-one fights against BN at the coming GE14.

Amanah and PPBM are believed to be working to convince PAS to avoid going on its own in taking on BN. PAS cut ties with the DAP last year when the two parties were partners in Pakatan Rakyat, and party leaders said they would never work with Amanah, led by former PAS members.

After Pakatan Rakyat fell apart, the DAP, PKR and Amanah formed Pakatan Harapan, while PAS has developed relations with Umno and retains its ties with PKR.

Recently, PAS leaders shared a stage with PPBM pro-tem president Muhyiddin Yassin, but it remains unseen whether this will change the Islamic party’s attitude against working with other opposition parties.

Last night, Mahathir reiterated the importance of opposition parties joining forces.

“There is only one way we can win. We have to unite. If we want to win, we have to put our differences aside,” he told the packed hall in the PAS-run state.
