GEORGE TOWN: There was zero growth in Penang’s manufacturing sector between 2008 and 2013 under the DAP-led government, state Barisan Nasional Chairman Teng Chang Yeow claimed.
He said the Gerakan-led Penang government had posted at least a near 20 per cent growth rate in the manufacturing sector during its stint from 2005 to 2007.
Teng said, unlike the DAP, the Gerakan had a clear development blueprint which had catapulted the then backwaters into an industrial hub in the region today.
Teng said the industrial sector, driven by Gerakan, had contributed vastly to Penang’s economy, especially in providing jobs to its people.
He said this at a press conference at Gerakan’s headquarters here, in accelerating what has been dubbed as “the war of GDP numbers” between the BN and the Penang government over the past week.
Earlier, the BN had taken a dig at the DAP-led state government, saying the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers were much better during the BN’s stint, while Pakatan’s economic performance was “abysmal”.
The Penang Pakatan government, however, accused the BN of using outdated statistics to prove its claim. The Pakatan government asserted that it had done significantly better in its eight-year term, by coming out tops in terms of GDP numbers in 2014 and 2015 nationally.
Meanwhile, Teng said today, between 2005 and 2007, when the BN was in power, the manufacturing GDP value went up by RM4.125 billion, a 19 per cent growth rate.
Teng said during the Pakatan’s term from 2008 to 2013, the same manufacturing GDP value dropped to -RM47 million (negative value), with zero growth rate.
“The Penang chief minister should stop bragging (about) his record. His state government has performed badly since taking over in 2008.
“Step by step and year by year, the chief minister has failed to manage the manufacturing sector as one of the main economic pillars of Penang, bringing down the growth of the sector from 10 per cent annually under BN to zero growth under DAP.
“We are launching a series to expose the chief minister’s lies and misleading (statements on) achievements,” Teng added.
