Opposition MP: PM should support motion to debate DOJ suit, 1MDB

PETALING JAYA: An opposition MP who has filed a motion to review the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s decision to bar questions on the Department of Justice (DOJ)’s suit has urged Prime Minister Najib Razak to support his move.

Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo said Najib should take full advantage of this opportunity as the entire government machinery and the floor of the house would be behind him.

“Where else can the Prime Minister be better equipped to explain this issue (DOJ and 1MDB) to the people but for Parliament,” he asked.

Gobind said silence on Najib’s part on a serious matter would not reflect well on him both locally and internationally.

“He should therefore, in the circumstances, as Prime Minister, step up and support the motion,” he said in a statement.

Gobind filed the motion yesterday after Pandikar had on Monday prevented questions on DOJ in relation with misuse of 1MDB funds on grounds of sub judice.

The lawmaker said the sums involved in the DOJ claim were huge and the serious allegations were a matter of public interest.

He said a debate in the Dewan Rakyat would be useful as it would enable questions to be raised and answers provided over the extent to which monies belonging to 1MDB have been used and the role played by certain individuals, including Malaysian Official 1 (MO1).

Barisan Nasional strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan has said that MO1 revealed in the DOJ suit is Najib.

Pandikar yesterday again said questions related to DOJ could not be raised as he feared the lawyers in the United States could rely on the Hansard in presenting evidence in court.

However, lawyers have rubbished that claim on grounds that whatever is said in the House was merely hearsay and not admissible unless witnesses were called to testify.
