KUALA LUMPUR: The reduction of allocation to the Higher Education Ministry in the Budget 2017 should be viewed positively, says its minister Idris Jusoh.
He said the reduction was in line with efforts to reduce the dependence of public universities on the government.
“It is also consistent with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 which doesn’t want public universities to be too dependent on the government.
Now the dependence is between 70 and 90 per cent,” he told reporters after attending a dinner with the University of New Haven, Connecticut, alumni here last night.
Idris said to counter the reduction in allocations, university alumni could play a role in assisting their universities. He also said it was time universities as well maximised the use of their assets.
A total of RM250 million was allocated to the Higher Education Ministry in Budget 2017 tabled last Friday.
