KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has welcomed a statement by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said that it was not proper or right for Putrajaya to appoint two members in the Bar Council.
He pointed out that Azalina, who was supposed to table the proposal for debate, does not believe in it. He urged the government to abandon it as it does not inspire confidence in view of the stand taken by Azalina.
“What Azalina said was certainly a step in the right direction,” said the MP in a statement. “It’s necessary to place on record what she said.”
“The government will be reminded in the future if it decides to proceed with the proposal for debate.”
Ramkarpal said there’s no doubt the Bar Council has always been an independent body of professionals.
“The government has no business in its affairs by the appointment of two representatives,” he said.
He said it will certainly be construed as an attempt by Putrajaya to silence the Bar particularly on matters where it’s critical and vocal.
“There can be no justification for such interference,” he said. “Other professionals, such as doctors and engineers, enjoy absolute independence through the bodies which represent them.”
The same, he stressed, must apply to lawyers.
