KUALA LUMPUR: About 76,000 stroke patients seek treatment at various hospitals and medical institutions each year with an estimated cost of RM316.51 million.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre head of Medicine Department Prof Dr Norlinah Mohamed Ibrahim said they comprised 45,000 in-patients and 31,000 out-patients.
However, she said the estimated treatment cost was not entirely financed by the patients as about 70 to 80 per cent of it was subsidised by the government as most of them do not have medical insurance.
“This estimated cost was made based on the study carried out by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on the costs for treatment of stroke for each patient who seeks treatment each year,” she said.
She said this after attending the launch of World Stroke Day and a smartphone application to monitor strokes known as “Stroke Riskometer” here yesterday.
