PETALING JAYA: It was during Mahathir Mohamad’s time as Prime Minister and Umno head that many of the party’s leaders had to support a man that most of the Opposition had called a hypocrite, says Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Nur Jazlan, head of the Pulai Umno division. said that his father, Mohamed Rahmat, then Umno secretary-general and Information Minister, had been criticised the most in those days for his defence of Mahathir and Umno’s interests in leading the government.
“Mahathir’s leadership caused Umno to be outlawed, with Umno being revived in 1988 according to his leadership. Today he has left Umno for the second time to openly oppose Umno. Who’s the real hypocrite?” Nur Jazlan said to FMT today.
His remarks were in response to a blog article by Mahathir yesterday that Barisan Nasional’s leaders were all hypocrites for supporting Najib Razak as prime minister despite knowing about his wrongdoing.
He said that BN leaders were deluding themselves and other people by defending Attorney-General Apandi Ali for deciding that Najib had done no wrong in handling the 1Malaysia Development Berhad issues.
“They are lying to themselves and to society. They are being hypocritical. They know that the prosecutors’ halting of the process is wrong,” Mahathir had said, adding that it was unfortunate how there are many “hypocritical” leaders still supporting Najib.
