KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak has never failed to declare his taxes, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said told Parliament today.
In a written reply to Dr Ko Chung Sen (DAP-Kampar), Azalina said Najib declares his income tax every year without fail to the Inland Revenue Board, based on the calculations and rates set by them.
Ko had asked Najib who is also the Finance Minister, if the latter and his wife Rosmah Mansor would publicly declare their income tax, similar to the practice of United States President Barack Obama and former British Prime Minister David Cameron.
He also questioned the couple if they would publicly declare the charitable bodies that have received personal donations from them.
Azalina did not answer the question diurectly, but said: “It is the prerogative of any leader to contribute to any charity bodies.”
Najib’s critics had repeatedly questioned whether the prime minister paid taxes for the RM2.6 billion donation he received from the Saudi Royal family.
Backbenchers Club chairman Shahrir Samad, however, insisted Najib need not pay any tax over the RM2.6 billion that was deposited into his personal bank accounts, adding that the tax should be borne by the donor and not the recipient.
