PETALING JAYA: The appointment of former Election Commission Chief Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman as vice-president of PPBM has raised eyebrows.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) lifetime member Zaeinal Abidin Omar wanted to know whether Abdul Rashid had the mettle to face the struggle ahead.
“Since when has Abdul Rashid fought against Najib (Razak)?
“It is as if after the house is properly built, out of nowhere, someone like Abdul Rashid and others have been brought in.
“A person who is not recognised as a politician has been brought in,” he told Malaysiakini.
“Some of us members have gone through the forest and bushes in our struggle for religion, race and country. Is Abdul Rashid prepared to do that?”
Zaeinal also questioned the appointment of Hamidah Osman as vice-president and half of those who are on the list.
Zaeinal told the news portal he had proposed that Tengku Razaleigh challenge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in 2008. He said he had been one of the staunchest in opposing Najib since then.
He said his criticism was necessary as he did not want Bersatu to be another Umno.
“There must be members who are brave to criticise others.”
He cautioned against any move to sideline former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad from any decisions and matters concerning the party.
PPBM today announed former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir as the party’s deputy president and also named the 14 Supreme Council members.
