Police rescue six human trafficking victims

BUTTERWORTH: The police rescued six Myanmar nationals, believed to be victims of human trafficking, in a raid at a flat in Bandar Perai Jaya here yesterday.

Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid said the five men and one woman, aged between 15 and 41, were locked up in the unit on the 11th floor.

“Initial investigations found that the victims were imprisoned in the unit since two days ago. Before this they stayed with a compatriot in a house in the island for 10 days,” he said here yesterday.

In the 12.30pm raid, the police also nabbed two Myanmar nationals aged 31 and 32, believed to be members of a human trafficking syndicate and the caretaker of the unit.

Nik Ros Azhan said all of the foreigners did not have any travel documents.

“The police also seized various receipts, mobile phones and RM2,301 in cash from the two men,” he said.
