PETALING JAYA:
Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed has urged Bersih 2.0 to abandon street protests as a political tool and enter the political arena as a party instead.

Speaking to FMT, the Pulai MP said the low turnout showed that people were fed up of street demonstrations despite the massive amount of rhetoric and extensive media coverage given to the rally.

He said the people would still rather wait for the next general election to make their decision as to which party they wanted to run the country.

“So I suggest that Bersih 2.0 abandon street protests as a political tool because of the lack of interest from the public and enter the political arena as candidates in GE 14.”

He also said opposition supporters should not allow themselves to be fooled by the likes of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the two, who were now heading Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), had benefitted from the system in many ways, including obtaining high positions and wealth while they were with Umno.

The Umno Supreme Council member said the duo supported Umno to be revived in 1988 after the party’s internal crisis, but were now intent on killing the Umno they created.

“So this means they have been fooling Umno members all this while. Their treacherous nature is there for everyone to see.”

“Now they are looking for new people to make use of. People in Umno have been fooled (by Mahathir and Muhyiddin), now the people in the opposition are going to be fooled.”

Nur Jazlan also said the fact that the police allowed both the Bersih 5 and Red Shirt rallies to proceed even though neither complied with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, showed that the government tolerated dissent and allowed citizens to demonstrate.

Today’s Bersih 5 rally drew tens of thousands while the Red Shirt’s rally drew an estimated 3,000 people.

The rally was relatively incident free, with only minor clashes between Bersih 5 and Red Shirts supporters.

At most times, participants from both camps were kept apart by the police.
