Orang Asli activist Siti Kasim makes it to Bar Council

She is among four new faces elected in direct election to the Bar Council.

KUALA LUMPUR: Siti Kassim, the co-deputy chair on Orang Asli rights, was among four new faces elected to the 2017/2018 Bar Council line-up.

Siti polled 1,893 votes to emerge fourth in the contest where 22 lawyers vied for the 12 slots in the direct election to the Bar Council.

Other newcomers are H R Dipendra, Mohamad Ezri B Abdul Wahab and Ravinder Singh Dhalliwal.

Former Bar Council chairman Hendon Mohamed topped the list with 2,518 votes.

Others retained are Ravi Nekoo, Karen Cheah Yee Lynn , Brendan Navin Siva, Andrew Khoo Chin Hock, Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor, Honey Tan Lay Ean and Roger Chan Weng Keng.

Although 17,394 ballot papers were issued, only 3,939 were received.

Another 24 members will come from state Bar committees, together with the incumbent chairman and vice-chairman of the Bar Council.

They will, among themselves, elect the chairman ,vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer after the Malaysian Bar’s annual general meeting in March.
