PETALING JAYA: The life-saving efforts of national basketball player Mohd Shadzwan Kamalrulzaman has been caught on video and is slowly gaining more attention on social media, Harian Metro reported yesterday.
The national basketball squad had arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport on Monday to take part in the 21st Super Kung Sheong International Basketball Invitational Championship.
An emergency situation occurred while the players were about to board the bus from the airport to take them to their hotel.
“Suddenly, we heard a woman screaming for help. I saw a man lying unconscious, with his lips turning blue. He was also frothing at the mouth.
“I checked and found that he had no pulse and was also not breathing. So, I decided to perform CPR on him until he eventually showed some response,” Shadzwan told Harian Metro, adding that he knew his efforts had worked when he saw the man moving his lips and eyes.
Shadzwan said he let the paramedics who had arrived shortly after to then take over the resuscitation efforts.
The whole scene and life-saving effort by Shadzwan would have been left there as a memory if not for Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) president Lua Choon Hann capturing all on his phone and later, uploading it to his Facebook account.
The 50-second clip has been viewed by about 45,000 people on Lua’s FB page and shared more than 200 times.
In response to the reaction his life-saving effort has gotten on social media, Shadzwan said he didn’t even realise that he was being filmed.
“I don’t think I did anything special because I’m sure anyone else would have done the same to help the man. I am simply happy that I was able to help in some way towards saving that man’s life,” a modest Shadzwan was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.
Shadzwan has been part of the national basketball squad for the past two years.
