Turkey back on list of 18 Christmas price-controlled items

Hamzah-ZainudinPUTRAJAYA: The turkey is back after a two-year hiatus from the Christmas season price control scheme.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainudin said the bird was on the list of price-controlled items until 2013.

“We only took the bird off the list in 2014 and 2015.

“This was due to some technical issues with the importers but it’s all settled now,” he said at the ministry’s headquarters in Putrajaya today.

Last year, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok raised the issue of turkey not being on the list of price-controlled items.

She had said turkey was a Christmas staple for many Christian families and it was therefore insensitive and inconsiderate of the government not to place the bird on the list.

Hamzah announced 18 items would be on the Christmas season price control scheme.

He said the maximum prices for wholesale and retail items were set in accordance with information gathered from the monitoring of prices this year and last year.

The 18 items will be monitored in 89 districts in the peninsula, 32 districts in Sarawak, 27 districts in Sabah and an area in Labuan.

Retailers will also have to place a pink price tag on goods that are on the price control list.

Hamzah said failure to follow the prices would result in a maximum fine of RM100,000, a jail sentence of up to three years, or both.

“Wholesalers can also be fined up to RM500,000 in court or have the offence compounded for up to RM250,000.

“Those who fail to display the pink tag can be fined up to RM10,000 in court or pay a compound fine of RM5,000. Wholesalers can be fined up to RM20,000 in court or have their offence compounded for up to RM10,000.”

Hamzah also warned that enforcement would be carried out for 10 days from Dec 19 to 28.
